Chiropractor for babies, children and pregnancy in Hilversum

Chiropractors treat people of every age, from the first weeks of life. For babies and children we use adapted examinations and very light, painless techniques; for expecting mothers we have specific methods that are safe until late in pregnancy. English speaking, no referral needed, usually seen within a few days.

Babies: when crying is not just crying

A baby cannot tell you where it hurts, so the signals are indirect: inconsolable crying, a preferred head position, arching backwards, a flattening of the skull on one side, not wanting to lie on the back, restlessness and poor sleep, excessive spitting up, or problems latching on and letting go during breastfeeding. Pregnancy and birth put real strain on a baby’s spine and upper neck: a breech or transverse position in the womb, a long labour with hours of pushing, a vacuum or forceps delivery, an induced or a very fast birth. The result can be an upper neck and skull that do not move freely, which makes the baby uncomfortable in exactly the positions it needs for feeding and sleeping.

After a careful history and examination the chiropractor first decides whether treatment makes sense or whether your child should be seen by someone else. Treatment itself is a light, specific pressure with the fingertips, no more force than you would use to test a ripe tomato. Babies recover fast; a few visits are often enough. We work closely with our paediatric physiotherapist and exercise therapist, who help with positioning, motor development and the flattened head.

Children and teenagers

From crawling to walking, climbing and sport, a child’s spine absorbs a lot: falls, heavy school bags, hours of gaming and a growing body that changes every month. Complaints show themselves differently than in adults: headache, stomach ache, tiredness, poor sleep, frequent tripping, a stiff neck after a fall, or back pain during a growth spurt.

We examine posture, movement, coordination and, in teenagers, the spine for scoliosis. Treatment is light and quick, and children usually enjoy it. Our paediatric physiotherapist sees children with motor delay, toe walking, sports injuries and growing pains.

Complaints we see every week

Preferred position and flat head

A baby that always looks to one side, sleeps with the head turned the same way and develops a flattening on that side (plagiocephaly). The earlier the upper neck is freed and the positioning adjusted, the better the skull recovers. Ideally seen before three months.

Crying, reflux and feeding problems

Chiropractor examining the pelvis of a pregnant patient

Inconsolable crying, especially in the evening, arching backwards, excessive spitting up and difficulty with the breast or bottle. Often linked to tension in the upper neck and the muscles of the jaw and throat. We examine and treat, and we tell you honestly when the cause is elsewhere.

Pregnancy: back and pelvic pain

Parents in conversation with the chiropractor about their baby

Hormonal changes, extra weight and a shifting centre of gravity hollow the lower back and load the pelvic joints. Lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain, sciatica like pain into the leg and a stiff upper back are common. Our chiropractors are trained in pregnancy techniques: light, effective and possible until the last weeks.

Safe at every age

Chiropractic for babies and children uses adapted techniques: light fingertip pressure for babies, gentle mobilisation for children, never the adjustments used on adults. For pregnant women we use specially adapted tables and positions that keep the belly free, and techniques without rotation of the lower back. The examination always comes first, and if your child or your pregnancy needs a doctor or midwife rather than a chiropractor, we say so.

How a visit works

History and examination

Gentle examination of the spine at MoveWell

For a baby: pregnancy, birth, feeding, sleep and development, then a gentle examination of the skull, neck, spine, hips and reflexes. For a child: posture, movement, coordination and the spine. For a pregnant woman: lower back, pelvis, hips and the upper back, adapted to your stage.

Gentle treatment

Light treatment technique on the treatment table

Light fingertip techniques for babies, gentle mobilisation for children and specific pregnancy techniques for mothers. A baby visit takes about 20 minutes; many babies fall asleep during or after treatment.

Frequently asked questions about babies, children and pregnancy

From what age can a baby see a chiropractor?

From the first weeks after birth. The techniques are adapted to the age: for a newborn we use very light fingertip pressure, no adjustments. Many parents come when their baby is between two and twelve weeks old, when feeding problems, crying and a preferred head position show up.

Is chiropractic treatment safe for babies?

Yes, in the hands of a chiropractor trained in paediatric techniques. Treatment is light, specific and painless; babies often fall asleep. The examination always comes first and we refer when something needs a doctor.

How many visits does a baby need?

Usually two to four. Babies recover quickly, and we see most parents notice a difference after the first or second visit. We always plan a check a few weeks later.

Can I be treated when I am pregnant?

Yes, in every trimester, with adapted techniques and positions that keep the belly free. Most pregnant patients come with lower back or pelvic pain and are treated until shortly before the birth. We also see mothers after the birth for the pelvis and lower back.

What is KISS syndrome?

KISS (kinematic imbalance due to suboccipital strain) describes a restricted upper neck in a baby with a preferred position, asymmetry and discomfort. The name is debated, but the complaints are real and respond well to gentle treatment of the upper neck combined with positioning advice.

Is treatment for children reimbursed?

Chiropractic for children is reimbursed from the supplementary insurance of the parents, without deductible. Physiotherapy for children under eighteen comes from the basic insurance. International insurers usually reimburse paediatric chiropractic; you get an itemised invoice.

Can a chiropractor help my baby sleep?

A baby that cannot find a comfortable position, arches or has tension in the upper neck often sleeps badly. When that is the cause, gentle treatment and positioning advice usually improve sleep within a few visits. If the cause is elsewhere, we say so and advise where to go.

Can I come after the birth for my back and pelvis?

Yes. Many mothers have lower back, pelvic or upper back pain from feeding, lifting and carrying. Treatment can start a few weeks after the birth, and we often see mother and baby in the same visit.
